Drug-drug interactions
| Severity level | Drug and description of interaction |
| 4 | dofetilide: May compete for renal tubular secretion. This competition may result in increased concentrations, and therefore increased side effects, of either drug. For dofetilide, this could mean an increase in potentially fatal arrhythmias.[1] |
| 3 | metformin: May increase the risk of lactic acidosis.[2]
procainamide, quinidine: May compete for renal tubular secretion. This competition may result in increased concentrations, and therefore increased side effects, of either drug.[3][4] |
| 2 | acetazolamide, methazolamide: These drugs increase the pH of the urine thus decreasing the elimination of memantine, which can lead to increased side effects of memantine.[5]
adefovir, cimetidine, digoxin, entecavir, lamivudine, midodrine, morphine, quinine, trimethoprim, trospium, vancomycin: May compete for renal tubular secretion. This competition may result in increased concentrations, and therefore increased side effects, of either drug.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] amantadine, dextromethorphan, ketamine: May increase the risk for CNS adverse effects. These drugs and memantine are all NMDA antagonists.[5] antimuscarinics: Antimuscarinics side effects may be increased with the coadministration of memantine. Adverse effects to watch for include urinary retention, dry mouth and blurred vision.[16] bromocriptine, levodopa, pergolide, pramipexole, ropinirole: The effects of dopamine agonists will be increased when coadministered with memantine.[5] |
