Director, Schusterman Library, University of Oklahoma-Tulsa

October 2007–present

Leadership, Planning, and Innovation

  • Oversee planning, organizing, policy creation and implementation, resource development and assessment, information resources and services, and educational program development and assessment for the Schusterman Library.
  • Develop both short- and long-range visions for the library that support teaching, learning, scholarly communication, patient care, and research.
  • Served as Project Owner and oversaw all aspects of the design and construction of the new Schusterman Library facility (completed May 2011), including managing the budget ($8.5 million), overseeing architectural planning, coordinating with contractors and subs, furniture and equipment planning and installation, and communicating and getting necessary work approvals from University administration and other officials.
  • Implemented leadership planning for the Schusterman Library, including an annual retreat for senior staff for goal-setting and teambuilding, plus regular follow-up and assessment.
  • Reorganized the library staff by adding three new professional librarian positions, developing a graduate assistantship program, and rewriting work responsibilities to align with modern library activities.
  • Created the Student Ambassadorship Program to enhance open dialogue with students.
  • Initiated a partnership with the OU School of Library and Information Studies: Created offices in the Schusterman Library for OU SLIS faculty, developed programs for Tulsa-based students, and began exploring mutually beneficial funding opportunities.
  • Initiated and serve as project manager for OU-Tulsa Archives & Oral History Project.
  • Serve on campus-wide strategic planning committee.
  • Contribute to the professional knowledge of academic health librarianship through professional development, special projects, presentations, research and publication.

Budgeting and Financial Management

  • Manage annual library budget of approximately $1.2 million.
  • Oversee all library finances, including state appropriations, student fees, grants and contracts, gifts, capital improvement funds, and service unit income.
  • Managed $8.5 million building project; finished construction and occupation of new facility on time and under budget.

Facilities Planning and Management

  • Reorganized office space to better meet staff needs; added group study options for students.
  • Oversee all facilities management for building, including air quality, computing, housekeeping, and security.

External Funding and Development

  • Brought in over $600,000 in grants, contracts, and gifts over nine years from private foundations and federal sources.
  • Oversee approximately $20,000 annually in supplemental earnings from information services provided to non-affiliated patrons.

Collaboration and Cooperative Outreach

  • Collaborate with the University of Oklahoma Libraries, OUHSC Bird Health Sciences Library, libraries in the South Central Academic Medical Library Consortium (SCAMeL), National Library of Medicine’s National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region (NN/LM SCR), and other university and college libraries in the state, the region, and the nation to develop and enhance information resources and services.
  • Collaborate with the faculty and administration to ensure that the library meets the needs of the Schusterman Center community.
  • Work with the Vice Provost/Graduate Dean and the Chief Fiscal Officer to ensure that all university policies and procedures are followed in the operation of the library.
  • Participate in university committees at OU-Tulsa, the University of Oklahoma, and the OU Health Sciences Center.

Personnel Management and Mentoring

  • Provide leadership and mentoring for faculty and staff in the department.
  • Supervise all library employees, including five professional librarians.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for library faculty and encourage their participation in local, state, and national organizations.
